Mount Shasta — Clear Creek Route

The Clear Creek Route offers a remote and less-traveled approach to the summit of Mount Shasta. Starting from the Clear Creek Trailhead on the mountain’s east side, the route climbs through open forest and volcanic terrain before entering the broad Clear Creek drainage. From there, climbers ascend increasingly steep snow or scree slopes toward the summit plateau and continue to the summit of Mount Shasta.
Conditions vary significantly throughout the season. Earlier in the year, the route may involve sustained snow travel, while later-season conditions can transition to loose volcanic rock and scree. Depending on conditions, crampons, an ice axe, and appropriate snow-travel skills may be required.
The Clear Creek Route is a long, strenuous climb with substantial elevation gain and limited infrastructure. Climbers should be prepared for a full-day effort at high altitude, significant exposure to weather, and changing terrain.

Route Description
From the Clear Creek Trailhead, follow the approach into the Clear Creek drainage and climb toward the upper mountain. The route gradually steepens as it ascends toward the summit plateau. Above the drainage, continue toward the summit, navigating snow, scree, and volcanic rock depending on conditions. From the summit plateau, climb to the summit of Mount Shasta before returning by the same route.
This is a single-day summit push requiring an early start, strong fitness, and the ability to move efficiently for many hours at altitude.
