Intro to Ice ClimbingAugust 1 to August 2, 2026 Coordinator: Mikela Kruger Elevation Gain: 1500 feet Round-trip Distance: 1.5 miles Excursion Time: 8 hours (car-to-car) Weather dependent. This is a one or two day clinic on Mt Hood. Plan on hiking for a few hours to get to the place where we will practice ice climbing. We may spend the night at the campground. First time ice climbers are welcome (will need to have other pre req). Topics covered include: Crampon Technique Glacial Navigation Anchor Building Two-tool Technique Hanging Belay Plenty of Climbing Practice Priority will go to SAC climb graduates and active SAC members. If I don't know you, please email me your climbing resume to kruger.mikela@gmail.com. Required skills: Able to self arrest and handle strenuous hike with heavy backpack. Need to be comfortable walking/hopping over boulders and uneven terrain. Handle all day on the mountain. Plan for First weekend of Aug but backup weekend is Sept 19/20. I will only accept other leaders/assistants to start and finalize final student count and determine final numbers in mid June.
