On June 16th, a mostly sunny, very windy day, Dana and Rich Margosian along with Fritz Capell, Stephanie Rockford and Ed Millis climbed South Sister via the standard route from Devil's Lake. We got an early start and slogged our way to the top, fighting high winds especially after the lake at about 8800'. The clouds came in when we were on top making the walk across the crater a rather surreal experience. Fritz and Stephanie both reached their first summit! Congrats! The descent was uneventful, as we like them! We were able to drop down from the trail onto the edge of the Lewis Glacier for some boot glissading and reprieve from the wind on the way down, lunch at the 8800' lake and further down test our different plastic glissading devices. And we decided that the stretch on the plain back to Moraine Lake trail is entirely too long. It was a great day, with only a few other parties on the mountain, and a happy hour dinner at McMenamins afterwards!
