Shasta Casaval Ridge

May 23 to May 25, 2026

Coordinator: Nicole Becker

Summit Altitude: 14 feet
Elevation Gain: 7400 feet
Round-trip Distance: 10 miles
Excursion Time: 48 hours (car-to-car)

Registration opens April 1, 2026

Casaval Ridge is the classic ridge line that bisects Mt. Shasta’s mass, separating the West Face from Avalanche Gulch. Casaval is a moderate climb with big risk potential in the form of exposure to long falls. The ridge’s serrated spine rises from 8,000 feet behind Horse Camp to just over 13,300 feet at its upper terminus at the base of Misery Hill.

• Experience Level: Advanced climbers with strong crampon, ice axe, and snow travel skills

Climbers must navigate steep snow, exposed ridges, and technical terrain that requires confidence and more advanced mountaineering skills compared to Avalanche Gulch. This route is best suited for those with previous experience and for climbers to further their skills in preparation for a bigger objective such as Denali. While demanding, Casaval Ridge delivers an unforgettable and striking ascent with some of the most unique terrain Shasta has to offer.

Saturday we will drive to the TH early and climb to base camp. Sunday we will push for the summit and return to the TH. Plan will be to camp or hotel nearby Sunday night. Monday (holiday) is a backup/weather day; we use it to return home or enjoy the local hot springs.
