Intro to Ice Climbing

September 20 to September 21, 2026

Elevation Gain: 1500 feet
Round-trip Distance: 1.5 miles
Excursion Time: 8 hours (car-to-car)

This is a two day clinic on Mt Hood. Plan on hiking for a few hours to get to the place where we will practice ice climbing. We will spend the night at the campground. First time ice climbers are welcome (will need to have other pre req). Topics covered include:

Crampon Technique

Glacial Navigation

Anchor Building

Two-tool Technique

Hanging Belay

Plenty of Climbing Practice

Priority will go to SAC climb school graduates and active SAC members. If I don't know you, please email me your climbing resume to kruger.mikela@gmail.com.

Required skills: Able to self arrest and handle strenuous hike with heavy backpack. Need to be comfortable walking/hopping over boulders and uneven terrain. Handle all day on the mountain.

Equipment
Required Equipment (each participant): Helmet, Harness, Ice tools/Ice axe x2 (There might be opportunities to borrow)., Mountaineering boots, Crampons, Belay device (with guide mode preferable), PAS, 2 locking carabiners, 2 regular carabiners, Day pack, Lunch
Optional Equipment (each participant): Camping gear for overnight, meals, etc
