Intro to Ice Climbing

August 17 to August 18, 2024

Coordinator: Mikela Kruger

Saturday morning we met at 8am at Cloud Cap, started hiking in about 830. Team went slow and got to glacier around 1030. Covered intro to ice climbing, team was very eager and excited to learn anything and everything and focused on skills development rather than pure climbing. At 2pm we got the updated report (via Andy) that the thunder storm was pulled back in to potentially start back at 4pm. Immediately I started taking Maria back down the mountain due to speed. Once we got to treeline around 330 we started hearing thunder very far away (didn't see any lightning yet) the boys where still further up the mountain. I saw a static bolt come off my ice ax so booked it down the hill to camp. Everyone was back to camp by 430 and by then the thunder and lightening was within about 3 miles. As it started getting closer everyone went in tents or cars until it got worse and everyone got into cars until storm passed at 9.

Sunday Noel, Hunter, and Aaron went back to the glacier to cover rope team, crevasse rescue, and a little more ice climbing. Maria stayed in camp/hiked on her own. I went to Hiroshima rock to take photos and help guide Noel on where they could go. They started hiking back around 230 and made it back at 4.
