Three Fingered Jack

July 30, 2018

Coordinator: William Strycharz

Summit Altitude: 7844 feet
Elevation Gain: 3000 feet
Round-trip Distance: 13 miles
Excursion Time: 11 hours (car-to-car)

Monday July 30 Meet@ Santiam Pass PCT trailhead at 8am. This climb is one of the most exposed dangerous peaks in the Oregon Cascades. There will be alot of unprotected scrambling with extreme exposure. The crux "The Crawl" portion and summit will be protected with ropes. I will attempt to place pitons for fixed ropes on some of the other exposed areas. The ascent is mostly hiking North on the PCT for @5.5 miles. We will ascend scree to the South Ridge normal route on the West side of the mountain. On the ridge the technical exposed dangerous climbing will begin. On the weekdays we will have the luxury of not waiting for other teams on the route. The higher we go the the slower the climb is. On the weekends this can be very frustrating and extremely slow going. Please do not sign up for this climb if you are afraid of heights or do not know how to rappel or belay. Burgers, Brats, Beers cookout at my truck post climb.

Bob says:
OK I'm pretty sure I was able to get off work this day. Is anyone heading down from Portland? Would love to hook up a carpool situation.

Michael answers:
Hi Bob - I'm heading down from Portland and could carpool.

Peter says:
I am in Salem if you Bob or anyone wants to meet up part way.

Peter answers:
Meet here? merges with 126/20 (Santiam Pass Highway). Just west of the pass and just east of the Hoodoo Ski Area you will see the Pacific Crest Trailhead lot on the north side (left) of the road. It is well marked. Pull in here, the trail begins from this lot.

Peter answers:
Sry: From Portland, take I-5 south to US 22 in Salem, OR. Take US 22 east towards Bend until it merges with 126/20 (Santiam Pass Highway). Just west of the pass and just east of the Hoodoo Ski Area you will see the Pacific Crest Trailhead lot on the north side (left) of the road. It is well marked. Pull in here, the trail begins from this lot.

Alex says:
I'll be there. Gonna do the usual campout night before in parking lot. Can't wait!

Michael answers:
Bob and I will also come down tonight and camp. Will probably get there around 11
