Broken Top 9,175'

June 23, 2018

Coordinator: William Strycharz

Summit Altitude: 9175 feet
Elevation Gain: 4000 feet
Round-trip Distance: 13.5 miles
Excursion Time: 10 hours (car-to-car)

Broken Top Via The Northwest Ridge. This climb will be a single day attempt on BT. Broken Top is one of my favorite volcanoes to climb. The day is moderately long but not overly strenuous. The level of difficulty climbing is low. There is a twelve foot crux to climb and rappel on the descent. After that crux there is a series of exposed catwalks to the summit with an exposed scramble to the top. I may bring a disposable rope to assist the summit pinnacle. As in securing a rope and team members may use prussik knots to safely ascend to the summit. Please on this climb, do not be terrified of heights.

Physical Requirements- be able to hike a long 13 mile day with light pack with 4,000' ele. gain

Technical Requirements- it would be useful if you have had some exposure to rock climbing, but not absolutely necessary.

Meeting time 6 AM- yes its early but on a saturday we want to beat everyone up to the summit. It is a natural choke point and progress of other groups will slow us down.

Meeting Place: Green Lakes Trailhead 5$/to park

Post Climb: Beers n Burgers at my truck!

Hi all, is anyone heading from Portland and wanting to carpool? I was considering staying at Soda Creek or Devil's Lakethe night before if there are spots.

Diane answers:
Hey Nate! I get off work in Salem at 7pm on Friday and will be in Portland by 8pm. Wanna carpool from either of those?

Nate answers:
Hi Diane, I'm thinking I'm going to take off from Portland quite a bit earlier, say 2:00 or 3:00. If you're able to duck out early, let me know, otherwise I'll see you there!

Diane answers:
Sounds good :) I won't be able to get out early, but safe driving and I'll see you!

Bob answers:
I'm awaiting approval currently, but I would be down to carpool and camp if we can leave Friday afternoon. I don't have a reliable vehicle but would be willing to rent one for the weekend.

Laurie answers:
I'm also awaiting approval, but would be interested in carpooling and camping, too!

Alice answers:
Hi!! I'd love to car-pool as well, but can't leave until early Friday evening. Kindly let me know if anyone is also leaving later.

Diane says:
Hi hi! Would there still be space for me to join y’all? I’m the one awaiting approval 😝 If so, I’d love to carpool Friday night! I live in Portland, but work in Salem so could carpool from any of those :)

William (leader) answers:
Sure Diane, your in!

Diane answers:
Awesome- Thanks, William! :)

William (leader) says:
Hello Team This is Bill Strycharz Unfortunately i have a family emergency and will not be able to lead this climb this coming weekend. I can reschedule it for Saturday June 23. I apologize sincerely for this inconvenience.

Diane answers:
Hello Bill, Hope everything is okay with you and your family! I got to do the climb this past weekend with some from this group. It was really nice! So I’m changing my rsvp to not attending. Hope to climb with you sometime! Take care xx

Ben says:
Hi Bill. So sorry to hear about the emergency. Sending you lots of good vibes. We'll have to climb it together some time soon. For everyone else, I'd still like to do the Broken Top climb. Wouldn't be an official club climb, but a few of us were still going to head down if you would like to join! We have a 30 meter rope, some slings, and rock pro for the summit. Shoot me an email tomorrow at (email hidden) if you're interested. Best! Ben

Jim says:
Hoping for the best for you and your family, Bill. I'll already be in the area for the South Sister climb the next day and would love to join this climb if you'll have me. I'm a 2018 climb school student who has climbed Hood three times, Adams, St. Helens and South Sister. I have some rock experience and am a gym climber.

Christopher says:
Hi Bill hope your family is doing well. Not sure where the numbers stand for this hike with the reschedule but if there is room, I would love to join! I have the same credentials as Jim less the St. Helens and South Sister climbs. Hope to see you guys in 2 weeks!

Christopher says:
Hi Team! I booked a campsite at Soda Creek Campground (it was the 1/2 left) and plan on leaving Portland Friday after work. If you would like to carpool and/or need a spot to sleep, I can take a few in the car and up to 6 at the campsite. See you all in a week!

Laurie answers:
I need a ride and can leave after work (or slightly earlier), so if you have room, i’d Love to carpool. I can meet anywhere in Portland.

Alice answers:
Hi Chris! Would love to carpool with you and share the campground. I’m also doing the south sister climb on Sunday, so I‘ll look for a ride back. I can also meet anywhere in Portland (with overnight parking).

Christopher says:
Alice and Laurie - You have a spot in the car! I am now full for a ride but if anyone wants to come along, the offer for the campsite remains

Bob answers:
Thanks, Chris - I'd like to stay at the campsite if there is still room. Is there anyone else leaving from the Portland area who wants to carpool on Friday?

John answers:
Bob, I am awaiting approval for this climb, but would be interested in getting a ride if there is also room for me at the campsite.

Nate says:
Hi all, I was carried over from the originally scheduled date and was (selfishly) hoping something my wife already had on the calendar would end up getting moved, but alas, it didn't so I'll have to bow out. Hope it's a great trip!

Laurie says:
I found a trip report on AllTrails from a couple days ago that said there was “plenty of snow 2-3 miles in” from the start of the Todd Creek trail...which looks to be around 6000-6500 ft. I was going to pack microspikes but, despite the description, do we need anything more serious?

Laurie answers:
Hey folks, I called the ranger station to see about snow conditions. It sounds like snow starts at about 6500 ft. The ranger said he'd recommend mountaineering gear (snowshoes/crampons) if we're headed up to 8000ft, but cannot recommend summiting. Figured I'd throw that out there.

Alice answers:
Hi Laurie, thanks for the info. I’m bringing my winter pack + mountaineering boots. See you soon!

Jim answers:
Thanks for the download, Laurie. I will have also bring mountaineering boots, crampons, etc.

Laurie answers:
Cool, i need to rent crampons, but will have my mountaineering gear, too

Christopher says:
Campsite can take up to 8 which is conveniently our group size so all are welcome at the site! Its site #6 at Soda Creek Campground if you get there before me.

Christopher says:
**For those joining camping, make sure to pay for the extra vehicle fee when you get in. I only have 1 tag already paid for.

John answers:
I ended up getting my car for this weekend, so I will pick up Bob and we will head out from Portland between 3:30 PM and 4:00 PM on Friday and will pay the extra vehicle fee when we get there.

Alice answers:
Hi Chris, and John: so I will ride with Chris and Laurie down to Soda Creek on Friday, and will swap with Bob for the return trip, as Bob is heading back on Saturday.

John says:
For those of us camping Friday, just wanted to point out that the website says they don't have running water. If you do forget to bring plenty of water, I will have an extra ~7G/26L in in my car.
